    TL;DR

    One paragraph, then the detail.

Indonesia has the largest tech workforce in South-East Asia, a mobile-first digital economy, and cost points below the Philippines for most roles. Sprint Labs is the legal employer, runs Rupiah payroll, handles BPJS Kesehatan/Ketenagakerjaan, THR (religious holiday allowance) and PPh 21 tax, and bills you one monthly seat cost.

    Why Indonesia

    Why companies hire from Indonesia.

Indonesia's digital economy — Gojek, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Traveloka — has produced a generation of engineers trained in high-scale, mobile-first product work. Costs are typically below the Philippines and comparable to Vietnam for mid-level engineering, and the size of the market means Sprint Labs can staff niche roles (Flutter, Kotlin, geospatial, fintech) faster than in smaller SEA markets.

    Compliance

Employment, compliance and payroll in Indonesia.

Indonesian labour contract (PKWTT / PKWT)

Sprint Labs signs an Indonesian-law employment contract with every hire — indefinite (PKWTT) or fixed-term (PKWT) as appropriate — with IP assignment carried through to the client MSA and Work Order.

    BPJS Kesehatan & Ketenagakerjaan

Health and social security BPJS contributions are registered and remitted monthly by Sprint Labs. You do not need an Indonesian entity.

    THR (Tunjangan Hari Raya)

Religious holiday allowance — equal to one month's salary — is legally mandated once a year (before the employee's religious holiday, typically Eid). Sprint Labs accrues it monthly so it never becomes a surprise invoice.

    PPh 21 income tax

Monthly PPh 21 withholding is handled by Sprint Labs, with annual filing on the employee's behalf.

    Leave & public holidays

12+ days annual leave, plus a generous national and religious holiday calendar. Sprint Labs administers all of it in-portal.

    Timezone & collaboration

How Indonesia overlaps your working day.

Jakarta is UTC+7 — three hours behind Sydney, one hour behind Singapore. That gives full synchronous overlap with the entire APAC working day, a strong early-shift overlap with the UK, and a workable 6–7 hour US West Coast morning overlap.

    FAQ

People asking about hiring Indonesian developers offshore.

How much does it cost to hire an Indonesian developer offshore?

A mid-level Indonesian software engineer through Sprint Labs typically costs USD 2,500–3,700 per month all-in; a senior USD 3,900–5,800. Mobile engineers are similar. That includes salary, BPJS, THR, hardware, HR and Sprint Labs' employer overhead. Indonesia is one of the most cost-effective markets in Asia for mid-level mobile and product engineering.

What is THR and is it mandatory?

THR (Tunjangan Hari Raya) is a legally mandated religious holiday allowance in Indonesia — one additional month of salary paid annually, before the employee's religious holiday. Sprint Labs accrues it monthly and pays it out on the correct date, so it is already priced into your seat cost.

Do we need to open an Indonesian entity to hire Indonesian staff?

No. Sprint Labs is the legal employer of record in Indonesia. Your team is contracted by us under Indonesian labour law, paid in Rupiah, and managed by you day-to-day. You receive a single monthly invoice in your currency.

    What is Indonesia strongest for?

Mobile-first engineering (Flutter, Kotlin, Swift), fintech and e-commerce backend, geospatial, high-scale consumer product work, and multilingual (Bahasa + English) customer support. Alumni of the Indonesian tech unicorns are a particularly strong bench for anyone building consumer or marketplace product.

Can Indonesian engineers work Australian or US hours?

Yes. Jakarta is UTC+7 — three hours behind Sydney, one behind Singapore. Full APAC overlap, strong UK-morning overlap, and workable US West Coast morning overlap on a shifted schedule.

How does Sprint Labs vet Indonesian candidates?

Same four-stage process as everywhere else. Every Sprint Labs hire clears a four-stage vetting process: application and screening (resume, initial skills screen, background and reference verification); a role-specific practical skills assessment under observation; a communication and culture interview in English, including recorded video; and security, client-communication and workflow training before any client introduction. Roughly 3% of applicants reach the talent pool.
