How much does an offshore AI engineer cost, and how does hiring one work?
Offshore AI engineers cost USD 3,000–4,500 per month all-in at mid-level, USD 4,500–7,000 senior. Demand is outpacing supply globally, so brief early and expect a three-to-six-week search rather than one.

What does a strong AI engineer change?
The AI engineer role barely existed three years ago, which means seniority is measured in shipped systems rather than years. That works in an offshore employer's favour: strong software engineers who've been building with LLMs since 2023 are available across Asia at a fraction of the San Francisco band, and they're often more product-minded because they've had to justify every token of cost.

What they own
- Design and ship LLM-backed product features
- Build retrieval pipelines and manage vector stores
- Create evaluation harnesses so quality is measurable
- Own inference cost, latency and fallback behaviour
- Keep up with model releases and migrate deliberately
What skills should an AI engineer have?
- LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini)
- RAG & vector databases
- Prompt engineering & evals
- LangChain / LlamaIndex
- Python
- TypeScript
- Fine-tuning & LoRA
- Embeddings
- Streaming & latency optimisation
- Token cost management
- MLOps basics

Interviewing an AI engineer.
Ask about evaluation, immediately
The single best filter. Engineers who've shipped AI in production talk about eval sets, regression testing and golden examples. Engineers who've only prototyped talk about prompts.
Cost and latency awareness
Ask what their last feature cost per thousand requests and how they got it down. Real answers involve caching, model routing and prompt trimming.
Failure handling
What happens when the model returns garbage? Look for structured output validation, retries and graceful degradation — not hope.
Add AI accent conversion for $1/hour per user.
If the role spends time on the phone, our AI accent conversion neutralises accent in real time so every call lands clearly with your customers — without losing the person behind the voice.
Real-time neutralisation
Accent is softened live on the call, with latency low enough that the conversation still feels natural.
Their voice, preserved
Tone, pace, warmth and intent stay theirs. It is your actual team member on the line, just easier to follow.
Your existing phone system
Layers over the softphone or dialler you already run. No porting, no new platform, nothing to retrain.
Hire an AI engineer from Asia.
Questions about hiring an offshore AI engineer.
What's the difference between an AI engineer and an ML engineer?
An ML engineer trains and serves models — data pipelines, feature engineering, model architecture, deployment. An AI engineer mostly builds on top of existing foundation models: retrieval, prompting, evaluation, orchestration and product integration. Most companies shipping AI features today need the second.
Can I hire an AI engineer offshore if my data is sensitive?
Yes, with scoping. Sprint Labs employees sign confidentiality and IP-assignment agreements, and you control access. Many customers have the AI engineer work against synthetic or redacted datasets during development and grant production access under a documented data-handling policy in the Work Order.
Do I need a local entity to hire an AI engineer offshore?
No. Sprint Labs is the legal employer in-market. We contract the AI engineer, run local-currency payroll, handle statutory benefits and compliance, and bill you one flat monthly seat cost in your own currency. You direct the work day-to-day exactly as you would an in-house hire.
How long does it take to hire an AI engineer through Sprint Labs?
Most briefs produce a named, vetted shortlist within 5–10 business days. From there you interview, choose, and we handle the offer, contract and onboarding — typical brief-to-start is three to five weeks depending on the candidate's notice period.
What happens if the hire is not the right fit?
Tell us within the first 30 days and we replace them at our cost. After that, engagements carry a 60-day cancellation notice, which protects the employee and gives you time to hand over work — but if you want to swap rather than terminate, we run a replacement search in parallel at no additional recruitment cost.
