    In short

How much does an offshore LLM engineer cost, and how does hiring one work?

Offshore LLM engineers cost USD 3,200–4,800 per month all-in at mid-level, USD 4,800–7,200 senior. Narrower and scarcer than the general AI engineer role — brief early.

    Why this role

What does a strong LLM engineer change?

Where an AI engineer integrates models into products, an LLM engineer goes a layer deeper: chunking strategy, embedding choice, reranking, fine-tuning decisions and rigorous evaluation. You need this role when quality has plateaued and nobody can explain why.

    How to evaluate

    Interviewing an LLM engineer.

    01

Make them diagnose a bad RAG system

Describe a retrieval system that returns irrelevant chunks. A strong candidate works through chunk size, embedding model, reranking and query rewriting systematically.

    02

    Fine-tuning restraint

Ask when they would fine-tune. Good answers are narrow: format adherence, domain tone, latency-driven distillation. Anyone who reaches for fine-tuning first is expensive to employ.

    03

    Measurement rigour

Ask how they proved a change improved quality. Look for held-out eval sets and statistical thinking, not vibes.

    Optional add-on

Add AI accent conversion for $1/hour per user.

If the role spends time on the phone, our AI accent conversion neutralises accent in real time so every call lands clearly with your customers — without losing the person behind the voice.

    Real-time neutralisation

Accent is softened live on the call, with latency low enough that the conversation still feels natural.

    Their voice, preserved

Tone, pace, warmth and intent stay theirs. It is your actual team member on the line, just easier to follow.

    Your existing phone system

Layers over the softphone or dialler you already run. No porting, no new platform, nothing to retrain.

    FAQ

Questions about hiring an offshore LLM engineer.

Do I need an LLM engineer or an AI engineer?

Start with an AI engineer. They'll ship features and integrate models competently. Add an LLM engineer when retrieval quality, hallucination rate or inference cost has become the bottleneck and you need someone who can measure and move it deliberately.

Is offshore supply real for this role?

Yes, but thin — this is a two-to-three-year-old discipline everywhere. Sprint Labs typically shortlists strong software or ML engineers with 12–24 months of hands-on LLM production work rather than people with 'LLM engineer' as a prior job title. Expect three to six weeks to a good shortlist.

Do I need a local entity to hire an LLM engineer offshore?

No. Sprint Labs is the legal employer in-market. We contract the LLM engineer, run local-currency payroll, handle statutory benefits and compliance, and bill you one flat monthly seat cost in your own currency. You direct the work day-to-day exactly as you would an in-house hire.

How long does it take to hire an LLM engineer through Sprint Labs?

Most briefs produce a named, vetted shortlist within 5–10 business days. From there you interview, choose, and we handle the offer, contract and onboarding — typical brief-to-start is three to five weeks depending on the candidate's notice period.

What happens if the hire is not the right fit?

Tell us within the first 30 days and we replace them at our cost. After that, engagements carry a 60-day cancellation notice, which protects the employee and gives you time to hand over work — but if you want to swap rather than terminate, we run a replacement search in parallel at no additional recruitment cost.
