    Why this role

What does a strong tax preparer change?

Accounting firms and finance teams lose their best people to preparation work. Offshore tax preparers absorb the workpapers, reconciliations and first-pass returns, leaving local reviewers to do the judgement work. Manila and Bangalore both have large benches with Australian, US and UK tax experience through outsourcing firms.

How your tax preparer learns to work with AI

Tax preparation is document-heavy work that ends with a reviewer's judgement. Training shows your tax preparer how AI can help organise records, build workpapers and raise clearer queries, with every tax position left to a qualified reviewer.

    Organising client source documents

Sort a practice set of bank statements, receipts, dividend statements and asset invoices into an indexed workpaper file mapped to each return label or schedule.

    How they check it

Every document is referenced to the trial balance or return line it supports, and gaps go onto the query list.

    Raising specific client query lists

Draft a client query list covering missing statements, unexplained deposits and asset purchases, with each query naming the amount, date and document needed.

    How they check it

Each query is checked against the records already held, and the list is reviewed by the manager before it goes to the client.

    Working through a review checklist

Prepare a pre-review checklist for a company or trust return covering depreciation schedules, GST reconciliation, loan accounts and prior-year carry-forward balances.

    How they check it

Figures are agreed to source workpapers, and any tax treatment or conclusion is decided and signed off by your qualified reviewer.

    Practical assessment

Using a de-identified set of company records, they build an indexed workpaper file, reconcile the trial balance, prepare a depreciation schedule and raise a client query list, noting the issues they would leave for the reviewer.

    How to evaluate

    Interviewing a tax preparer.

    01

Score their workpapers, not their answers

Hand over a small, messy set of client records and review what comes back. Referencing, notes and the quality of the query list tell you exactly how much review time this person will save you.

    02

    Work sample beats CV claims

Sprint Labs screens every tax preparer on a short, realistic task drawn from the work you actually need done, then sends you the output alongside the CV. You see the standard before you spend an interview slot on it.

    03

    English and communication are scored

Written and spoken English is assessed and you get a voice recording before you interview, so you know how this person will land in a client call, a Slack thread or a handover note.

    Optional add-on

Add AI accent conversion for $1/hour per user.

If the role spends time on the phone, our AI accent conversion neutralises accent in real time so every call lands clearly with your customers — without losing the person behind the voice.

    Real-time neutralisation

Accent is softened live on the call, with latency low enough that the conversation still feels natural.

    Their voice, preserved

Tone, pace, warmth and intent stay theirs. It is your actual team member on the line, just easier to follow.

    Your existing phone system

Layers over the softphone or dialler you already run. No porting, no new platform, nothing to retrain.

    FAQ

Questions about hiring an offshore tax preparer.

How much does an offshore tax preparer cost?

Roughly USD 2,000–2,700 per month all-in at mid-level and USD 2,700–4,700 for a senior preparer with local-jurisdiction experience.

Can they work inside our practice software?

Yes. They work in your instance of Xero Tax, MYOB AE, CCH, Drake or Lacerte under your access controls, exactly like an in-house preparer. Data never needs to leave your environment.

What AI skills will my tax preparer learn?

Your tax preparer learns to use AI to organise client source documents, draft specific query lists and prepare review checklists and workpapers. Figures are agreed to source records, and every tax treatment and conclusion is reviewed and signed off by a qualified professional. Tool use on client files depends on what your firm approves.

Do I need a local entity to hire a tax preparer offshore?

No. You sign a Master Services Agreement and Work Order with Sprint Labs, and Sprint Labs engages the tax preparer as an independent contractor. We handle contracts, fees and payments, engagement support and one monthly invoice. You direct the work day-to-day exactly as you would an in-house hire.

How long does it take to hire a tax preparer through Sprint Labs?

Most briefs produce a named, vetted shortlist within 5–10 business days. From there you interview, choose, and we handle the offer, contract and onboarding — typical brief-to-start is three to five weeks depending on the candidate's notice period.

What happens if the hire is not the right fit?

Tell us within the first 30 days and we replace them at our cost. After that, engagements carry a 60-day cancellation notice, which protects the contractor and gives you time to hand over work, but if you want to swap rather than offboard, we run a replacement search in parallel at no additional recruitment cost.

Is AI training included with this placement?

Yes. Once your team member starts, they can enrol in role-specific AI training with no additional training fee. You choose when they enrol, and the self-paced modules run during their normal working hours.

Can the training align with our tools and AI policies?

Yes. The course teaches general skills on practice material, and how your team member applies them depends on the tools, access and AI policy your business approves. If certain work must stay AI-free, they follow your rules. Third-party software subscriptions aren't included and are agreed during onboarding.
